To Boldly Go

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy inspired the nation:

We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.

In Memory of William Edward “Bill” Tomberlin

December 1, 1927 – October 7, 2025

On the first day of December in 1927, Charlie and Mary Tomberlin welcomed their first son. They wanted to give him a strong name. Parents often give names to children that reflect strong character. Charlie’s father was named Judge Mershon; and his grandfather was named Major Dobby. Those names reflected wisdom and leadership. Charlie and Mary named their newborn son William Edward. The name William means “strong-willed warrior.” The name Edward means “prosperous guardian.” Both names were introduced to the English world by renown 11th century kings – William the Conqueror and Edward the Confessor. A boy given the name William Edward was expected to have royal character. Bill lived up to his names. He was a prince of a man.

The Legacy of Charlie Kirk

When Jesus is in the Room, Everyone Else is Humiliated

I watched the Charlie Kirk Memorial, all five hours. The stadium was filled with more than sixty thousand people, including some of the richest and most powerful men and women in the world. I celebrated as speakers testified of the Lordship of Jesus Christ. I wept and rejoiced as Jesus was being glorified in worshipful song.

Between Abundant Life and Full of Trouble

I recently shared with one of my classes that I lived between the tension of John 10:10 and Job 14:1. I confessed Christ as Lord just before I turned fifteen years old. I eagerly read through Scripture and quickly discovered passages that shaped my life. Jesus said,

I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10).

As a young man, these words encouraged me to live life full of hope, joy, and anticipation. I was convinced that as long as I followed after Jesus, my life would be full.

A Pentecostal Middle Way

I presented this message at Pentecostal Theological Seminary in 2022. Joshua ask the Angel, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” The angel responded, “No! I am the Lord’s commander!” God doesn’t choose sides. God commands obedience from all sides.
