John tells us of Jesus’ encounter with an unnamed woman of Samaria of questionable reputation, in broad daylight. Furthermore we learn that she has suffered multiple broken relationships – five husbands and presently living with a man to whom she is unmarried. Jesus looks into her heart and discovers that she is broken and dysfunctional, likely with a history of physical and emotional abuse. This encounter is not accidental. Jesus came to the well, not because he was thirsty; but he knew she was in desperate need of a new life.
