Laughing in the Spirit

Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy (Psalm 43:4).

I been reading about the Toronto Blessing of the 1990s, which was known for the phenomenon of holy laughter. I remember being in a seminar at Church of God Theological Seminary (now PTS) with the late F. J. May during this time. Someone asked him of his opinion about Toronto and holy laughter. He responded, “My God, I can’t think of anything the Church of God needs more than a revival of joy.”

A Reflection on Fiducia Supplicans

I am a Christian who holds to the classical orthodox faith. I am a protesting Pentecostal, who believes in the universality of the Church. I am not Roman Catholic, but I would like to offer reflections on the recent document Fiducia Supplicans: On the Pastoral Meaning of Blessings. This document has been popularly interpreted as the Vatican’s affirmation of homosexual relationships and representing a change in Roman Catholic teaching regarding human sexuality. In the spirit of Christian fraternity, I have carefully read the document. I would like to offer some reflections.

A Christmas Message: The Pathos of Advent

In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind (John 1:4).

The Incarnation of the eternal Son is situated within human experience. In other words, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14) means that God experienced the fulness of human experience, and humans might experience the fulness of God. Pathos is an expression of emotion, or passion. So, to speak of the pathos of Advent is to reflect on how the coming of Christ moves us towards faith in God. The pathos of Advent is illustrated in the candles of the Advent wreath. As we moved towards the celebration of Christmas, we light a candle and reflect.
